Phase 01

The problem

Pack Ur Bags Travel sells gear tied to trips people are actively booking — a standard product-and-cart flow wasn't enough. A generic e-commerce checkout treats every purchase as a standalone transaction, but here the gear and the trip it's meant for are connected: dates, availability and traveler counts all matter in a way a plain product catalog was never built to track. Left as two separate systems, a customer could end up buying gear disconnected from the trip it was meant for, creating exactly the kind of fulfillment mismatch a travel brand can't absorb at scale without it turning into a support burden that eats into the margin on every affected order. A customer showing up for a trip with the wrong gear, or gear that arrives after the departure date, is a failure that can't be fixed after the fact the way a late delivery for an ordinary online order usually can be.

Phase 02

What we built

We built the storefront on Shopify Plus specifically because it supports the level of custom API work a standard Shopify tier doesn't allow — the custom APIs connect product inventory directly to booking data, so a purchase and a trip booking share the same transaction record instead of living in two disconnected systems that have to be reconciled by hand later. Stripe handles payment across both flows, which avoids the reconciliation headache of running gear purchases through one payment system and bookings through another with separate settlement timelines and separate refund logic to manage. The result is one coherent purchase path instead of two systems that happen to sit on the same site but don't actually talk to each other underneath it. Building on Shopify Plus rather than a fully custom cart also meant Pack Ur Bags Travel kept the parts of e-commerce that don't need reinventing — catalog management, discounting, tax handling — while the custom layer only had to solve the one problem that was actually specific to a travel gear business, instead of reinventing checkout functionality that Shopify already handles reliably at scale.

Project Outcome

Where it stands today

Verified Results

Customers can buy gear and confirm a trip booking in the same checkout, instead of two separate transactions on two separate systems. That single transaction record also simplifies fulfillment on the operations side, since there's one order to track instead of matching a gear purchase back to a booking after the fact whenever a support question comes in. Support staff can answer a question about either the gear or the trip from the same record, instead of checking two systems and cross-referencing dates by hand.
