MNG Makhana: A WooCommerce Store Built Around Tiered Product Grades

A WooCommerce storefront for a D2C makhana brand, built around five product grades instead of one generic product page.

Case study

The problem

MNG Makhana sells roasted fox nuts across five distinct quality grades, from Regular to Premium — a single generic product listing wasn't going to represent that clearly enough to convert. A buyer comparing grades needs to see the difference in quality, price and use case side by side, not buried in a dropdown menu on one product page where the distinction is easy to miss entirely and easy to second-guess after the fact. Burying the grade distinction is also exactly what would have suppressed the upsell to Premium, since a shopper who can't easily compare grades tends to default to the cheapest option rather than the one that actually fits what they're buying it for, whether that's daily snacking or a gift box. The grading system was already central to how MNG Makhana talked about its product internally, so the storefront needed to carry that same distinction through to a first-time visitor instead of flattening five grades down to one generic listing. Losing that nuance online would have meant the site was selling a different, less differentiated product than the one MNG Makhana actually makes.

What we built

We built the store on WordPress and WooCommerce with a tiered product structure, treating each grade as close to its own product listing with its own pricing and positioning rather than a variant buried in a selector dropdown a shopper has to click through. Bundle-based promotions were built in to support cross-grade purchasing and gifting, where a customer might want a mix rather than committing to one grade at checkout. The checkout was configured specifically to handle nationwide shipping zones and rates at scale, since default shipping calculations that work fine for a handful of orders a day can break down once order volume and delivery regions both grow past a certain point and start producing incorrect rate quotes. Structuring grades as near-separate listings also meant photography, descriptions and pricing could be written specifically for each grade's actual buyer, instead of one generic paragraph trying to describe five different products at once, which is what a single shared listing would have forced regardless of how well it was written.

Where it stands today

The store runs live as MNG Makhana's primary sales channel, handling everything from single-pack orders to bulk B2B enquiries. The tiered structure that was built to make grade comparison clear at launch is the same structure now carrying both ends of that order range without needing a separate system for bulk buyers. That same grade-first structure is also what makes it straightforward to add a new grade or bundle later without redesigning the storefront around it, since the underlying pattern already accounts for products that need to be compared side by side rather than sold in isolation.

FAQ

Questions about this project.

WordPress and WooCommerce, built in PHP, with a tiered product structure across five product grades and nationwide shipping zones configured before launch rather than adjusted reactively after the store went live.

An e-commerce store with tiered products, bundle promotions and nationwide shipping logic runs longer than a standard marketing site — closer to the timeline for stores and apps than a few-week brochure site, since checkout and shipping logic both need real testing against live scenarios before launch.

Yes — it's MNG Makhana's primary sales channel today, running everything from single-pack retail orders through to bulk B2B enquiries on the same storefront.
