What you actually get

Core capabilities & deliverables

01

Content structured for extraction, not just reading

A generative engine has to be able to lift a clean, self-contained answer out of a page. We write key sections as direct, complete answers near the top of the page — not dependent on the paragraph before it to make sense — so an AI system can quote it accurately instead of skipping it for a competitor's cleaner-structured page.

02

Schema and structured data an engine can actually parse

JSON-LD markup, clear entity definitions and consistent structured data across a site give generative engines a machine-readable shortcut to what a page is actually about, instead of forcing them to infer it from prose alone.

03

A content freshness cadence, not a one-time push

Generative engines weight recency more heavily than classic search does in a lot of categories. We treat GEO as an ongoing update cadence on the pages that matter most, not a single optimization pass that goes stale within a quarter. In practice that's a quarterly review of a site's highest-intent pages — checking whether a stat, a price range or an example has aged out — rather than a one-time rewrite we hand off and never revisit. That cadence matters more here than it did for classic SEO, where a well-ranked page could coast for a year or two on its existing authority; a generative engine re-evaluates sources continuously, so a page that quietly goes stale can lose citation share well before it would have lost a classic search ranking.

04

E-E-A-T built in, because it's the gatekeeper here

Research into AI Overview citations found the large majority came from sources with strong Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trustworthiness signals — and that pages with strong E-E-A-T but a lower classic ranking were cited more often than top-ranked pages with weak E-E-A-T. In generative search, E-E-A-T reads less like a ranking nudge and more like a pass/fail gate.

Generative Engine Optimization is the practice of structuring a website so generative AI systems — Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot — can find, understand and cite it when they synthesize an answer to a user's question. It's a narrower, more technical term than "AI SEO," which gets used more loosely across the industry (see our AI SEO page for that broader picture).

Where classic SEO earns a click by ranking a link, GEO earns a mention or a direct quote inside an AI-generated answer — often without the user ever visiting the site at all. That changes what "success" looks like, and it changes some of the technical priorities involved in getting there.

Closely related but not identical — GEO is the specific technical practice of optimizing for generative answer engines, while "AI SEO" is used more broadly and inconsistently across the industry, sometimes to mean the same thing and sometimes to mean using AI tools for regular SEO work.
